Pre Procedure Information

What Happens Before and After the Procedure?

Please stop any medications that thin your blood. We will discuss specific medications to during a pre-procedure appointment. You will be able to continue taking all your other medications with a sip of water on the day of your procedure.

What Happens During the Procedure?

We perform our Stellate Ganglion Blocks under Ultrasound, in our opinion this is the safest method of performing this injection.

Numbing medicine will be placed under the skin and then a needle will be placed at the Stellate Ganglion. A different local anesthetic will then be injected around the Stellate Ganglion to block and reset the sympathetic response.

You can watch a video of the procedure here

What Are Possible Side Effects?

Any invasive interventions, including a stellate ganglion block, may cause complications that can be serious. By performing the procedure under ultrasound we are able to greatly decrease the risk of serious complications
Common side effects include:

Pain, tenderness, swelling or bruising around the injection

Less common, but also possible complications:

  1. Infection (around the injection site internally or externally)
  2. Bleeding (around the injection site internally or externally)
  3. Allergic reaction to the dye or medicines injected
  4. Surrounding nerve or spinal block
  5. Injury to surrounding nerves
  6. Injury to surrounding organs
  7. Local anesthetic toxicity
  8. Failure of injection
